Beef Island International Airport was renamed in 2002 as the TB Lettsome International Airport in honour of Past Legislator, Terrance B. Lettsome. This momentous occasion occurred during the opening of the new and expanded terminal building which is part of a $65,000,000 investment at the airport. Other works included 1) The extension of the airport runway from 3,500 feet to 5,000 feet; 2) The construction of a new international tower; and 3) The design and construction of a Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Facility.
Caribbean Basin Enterprises (BVI) Limited was contracted by The Government of the Virgin Islands in February 2003 to design, procure, construct and commission a “SEWERAGE TREATMENT AND REUSE FACILITY”. The project wasadministered by the Airport Project Management Unit on behalf of the Department of Civil Aviation while the USVI engineering firm of TSG Technologies were engaged as the Employers Representatives on behalf of the BVI Government.
Because of the superior effluent guaranteed by ZENON Environmental, Inc, an ultra filtration membrane system manufacturer, the BVI Government approved this modern technology for installation at the TB Lettsome International Airport. The following table illustrates the design parameters required and that guaranteed by ZENON, as follows:
PARAMETER | INFLUENT | REQUIRED FINAL EFFLUENT | ZENON GUARANTEED EFFLUENT |
Avg Daily Flow | 40 to 80 M3/d | 40 to 80 M3/d | 40 to 80 M3/d |
BOD5 | 250 Mg/L | 10 Mg/L | < 5 Mg/L |
TSS | 240 Mg/L | 10 Mg/L | < 2 Mg/L |
TKN | 45 Mg/L | < 2 Mg/L | |
Fecal Coliform | 106 (cfu/100ml) | <2.2 (cfu/100ml) |
